On the Third Day of Christmas: Menswear Wedding Trends in 2019/2020

‘Tis the season to recollect on a year’s worth of wedding trends and what’s to come after the calendar year ends. To a “12 Days of Christmas” tune, we’re revisiting what big day details we saw in 2019 and what’s sure to appear in 2020. (Spoiler alert: No partridges in pear trees… but a pheasant or peacock, maybe.)

With the help of personal stylist Vanessa Valiente, we are taking a trip down memory lane to look back on menswear wedding styles of 2019 and ahead to help find a look that’s perfectly “suited” for you or your guy in 2020.

For starters in 2019, we saw the rise of the bolo tie, Valiente says. The combination of this accessory with vintage, turquoise cufflinks were very popular this past year, as grooms—not just brides!—have become bent on embracing a boho look.

We also saw men leaning more toward a neutral tie that they could wear again, as opposed to loud and brightly colored ties.

Also popular in 2019 were velvet suits and bow ties made out of either feathers or wood—yep, you read right: ties made out of pheasant and peacock feathers and bow ties carved out of wood!

Missing in 2019 was those beachier looks. Jeans, bare feet, and a white top just didn’t make the cut, as more grooms were opting for plaid or boho riffs on their wardrobes.

In 2020, we will see more personalization, Valiente say, as grooms continue coming into their own with picking out their wedding day look, with everything from cool cufflinks to fancy ties and even a unique brooch.

“I am seeing more and more grooms really connect to their own personal style,” Valiente says. “The men’s wedding look is becoming a look of personal style in general.”

You heard it here. Grooms, consider yourselves granted permission to embrace whatever you style you please—printed suits, customized accessories, and every show-stopping shoe.

Hey, it’s your day, too. Have it your way!
