John is from Paradise Valley, Arizona, but his real paradise is Phoenix, because that’s where he met Melissa.
“After just a few dates we felt something undeniably different, something we had never felt before: true, unconditional love,” Melissa says. “The bond we formed seemed effortless.”
Just a year later, the couple got engaged on a sunset sailboat cruise in the tropical paradise of Maui. John made a scrapbook documenting their memories, with a “To be continued” page at the end. And so their love story carried on in sunny San Diego, though it wasn’t so sunny on their big day.
Thankfully, they had a roof over their heads when the rain poured during their Catholic ceremony in the Immaculata at USD and reception at Estancia La Jolla. Not even a little drizzle could upset their best day ever.
“The best part of planning the wedding was getting to do it with my mother in law. She was with me every step of the way.”
Rainy weather called for a last-minute change to the couple’s wedding day timeline. They hadn’t planned on doing a first look, but decided to do so at their reception venue before the ceremony, so as not to miss the opportunity for photos against the lush landscaping.
John and Melissa were instantly drawn to the rancho style of Estancia La Jolla and incorporated soft vintage decor throughout the ballroom for a “vintage hacienda” theme.
