Landscape architect Nathaniel Magnusson, 36, and jewelry designer and Love Tatum owner Tatum Lenahan, 31, said “I do” on the autumnal equinox—when the day is equal parts light and dark—and the celestial event informed their gorgeous aesthetic.
“We carried this theme throughout our wedding,” Tatum says, “asking our guests to wear white and navy blue.” Other personalized elements of the San Diego couple’s fete included signature cocktails named after gemstones, a ceremony kicked off with a breathing meditation courtesy of the officiant (who was also the bride’s childhood best friend), and the inclusion of their mini French bulldog, Dumpling, as a flower girl. Their 80 guests enjoyed steel drum players during the cocktail hour, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald while eating braised short rib and seasonal vegetables with ancient grains, and then danced the night away to tropical house music.
The party’s aesthetic extended to the tabletops, where accents included vintage gold-and-black glassware and constellation-themed napkins.
A white cake by Hey There Cupcake, dripping with real smoky quartz crystals, was the dessert pièce de résistance.
“When we walked through the Martin Johnson House together it felt right,” Tatum says. Nathaniel promotes sustainability in his work, so the couple wanted a ceremony backdrop of wild succulents. Plus, Tatum says, “The little cottage-style home overlooking the open sea, under big, earthy pine trees, embodied everything we could hope for.”
