This wedding at Los Peñasquitos Ranch House boasts DIY decor, a sangria bar, and seriously cool ode to beer.
Kim and Matt met through mutual friends, and he proposed during a trip to Yellowstone National Park. “He dropped down on one knee in front of Imperial Geyser after a long hike when I was least expecting it,” she says. “I was sweaty and smelly, but thrilled!”
They opted for Los Peñasquitos Ranch House because it captured the feel they wanted at a much lower price tag thanks to its status as a county park. “We were going for rustic, green, and eclectic, which is totally us,” she says. “All of the decorations were DIY and our favors were either made or grown by us, like homebrew, vegetables, chili powder, seeds, etc. I am an ornithologist and my husband is a marine biologist, so that’s why you’ll see lots of bird-related/sea life-related items.”
But one of the most memorable moments of the wedding was incorporating a beer mixing into the wedding ceremony, similar to a sand or wine mixing tradition. “Matt used to work at Ballast Point Brewing Co., so that’s why we used their beer,” she says. “If you go to one of their tasting rooms, you can order a ‘Black Eye,’ which is a mix of their ‘Black Marlin Porter’ and their ‘Big Eye IPA,’ and that is what we re-created for our ceremony. We also enjoy brewing at home and included some of our homebrew as favors for the guests to take home. M&K Brewery is what we call ourselves, so that’s why you’ll see it stamped on the corn hole set and on the wooden boxes we placed the beer in.”
