La Jolla native Nicole Enberg met Pedro Vaz in 2003 at a University of Michigan party. They connected during a moment of crisis when Nicole’s friend found herself locked in the bathroom. A few days later, Nicole asked Pedro to a sorority party, and in 2012 he proposed on a surprise trip to Aruba. Now 29 and a publicist at ABC News in New York City, Nicole tied the knot with Pedro, 30, a private equity investor, at his family’s summer home in Portugal. —Erin Meanley

Dad’s Toast
Naturally, the bride’s father, Padres announcer Dick Enberg, nailed his toast. “My dad had an incredible speech,” Nicole says. Enberg told stories about the couple, and closed by addressing his new son-in-law: “Pedro, thank you for loving our daughter. You have consummate good taste.”
Table Decor
The tables were simple with wildflowers, candles, and blue and yellow glassware (Michigan colors).
On the Menu
Guests sipped on vinho verde, a sparkling green wine, and dined on puréed vegetable soup, squid rice with Madeira wine sauce, and duck breast with veggies.
The Dress
Nicole’s Elizabeth Fillmore was the first gown she tried on at a trunk sale in New York. She was looking for something “sexy, old-school glamorous, and comfortable,” and indeed it was. “I needed to be able to dance in the dress … and I did, until 5 a.m.!”
Local Tradition
Women of Vacariça decorated the exterior of the church with flowers and herbs to give it a heavenly fragrance. Afterwards, locals threw rice and petals, and Pedro’s parents returned the favor by passing out bags of candied almonds.
Just Down The Road
Pedro’s family’s 16th-century manor house (where the reception was held) was just 300 yards from the church.
