Vendor Interview: Event Planner Mindy Weiss

The Beverly Hills- and New York-based event planner, who recently coordinated Bachelorette Ashley Hebert’s TV wedding, got her start right here in San Diego.

How did you get your start in party planning? I was the Event Chairman for my sorority, Gamma Phi Beta at SDSU. I have some of the greatest memories planning trips and themed parties for our chapter. That’s where my planning foundation began. Even my mistakes taught me something; not charging the girls enough or having to call my dad to get us out of trouble.

What’s your favorite wedding venue in San Diego? I enjoy planning weddings at Cal-a-Vie or The Grand Del Mar.

Color combos? Loving neutral and organic color palettes—grey, cream, and touches of blush or coral.

What is the one thing a bride should not skimp on? Photography! Pictures are one of the only things you have left after your big day.

Serving guests alcohol before the ceremony: yay or nay? Nay—they have all night to drink.

Best favor you’ve seen? I like when couples make a charitable donation in honor of their guests.

What was your most elaborate wedding? For one of my weddings, we created an entire environment in the middle of an empty field. We brought in everything from electricity to water to flooring to a full tent—it was a magical setting!

Any trends you’re loving right now? A lot of brides are wearing sheer sleeves, which are a very classic and timeless look.

What is the most extreme request you’ve gotten from a bride? A few of my clients have requested elephants and unique animals at their wedding for good luck. It’s not easy—permits and dealing with animal regulations can be challenging.

Tell us one detail you cherish at a wedding. I love giving the woman a vintage handkerchief at the ceremony.

What are good yet unexpected places to shop for wedding décor or accessories? I shop a lot at flea markets (Rose Bowl and Long Beach) for props and fun details, or even just to find inspiration for events. I’m there every Sunday, rain or shine!

Who’s your favorite dress designer? I love the new collection from Monique Lhuillier. It’s romantic with a modern twist on traditional gowns.

Favorite flower? I always love peonies! Garden roses are very romantic and are a nice change from traditional roses. I love mixing succulents with romantic flowers.

What is the most important thing you tell brides? Don’t try to plan your wedding the first week you get engaged. Take time to enjoy the process! And always set your budget before booking any vendors.

Do you have an ideal timeline for planning a wedding? I love planning a wedding a year out or a week out; I know it can all be done!

What’s the best way a bride has thanked you? One couple made a donation to the LA Children’s Hospital in my honor. That’s the hospital that took care of my son when he had cancer, so it holds a very special place in my heart. It was such a thoughtful gift.

How does someone become your client? We work with clients all over the world and for all types of events. All brides are welcome.
