Melanie and Efren’s wedding at the Admiral Kidd Club is full of passion and energy.
The Story: Efren and Melanie dashed to the airport for a 6 a.m. flight to San Francisco; Efren had planned the trip and Melanie’s only job was to show up for a “special romantic weekend.” When they arrived at the airport, a surprise awaited: San Francisco was a rouse; instead, they were jetting to New York to see “Les Miserables,” a musical Melanie sometimes obsessed over, but had never seen. And yet another surprise: Efren planned to ask her to be his wife.
“I’m really cheesy and so is Efren,” says Melanie, a self-proclaimed chatterbox. “I’m thinking, Is he going to have someone pop out on stage in the middle of the show? I was trying not to let on that I knew.”
Melanie left the theatre without a ring, but Efren ended up giving his own performance later: he popped the question during a romantic gondola ride on a lake in Central Park. Even though a throng of onlookers cheered at this sight, they would eventually be outnumbered by the guests who witnessed the actual wedding.
Melanie and Efren got married on Sept. 27, 2009, at the Admiral Kidd Club in Point Loma in front of 220 guests, joined by six attendants on each side. A few days before the ceremony, as out-of-town guests began to trickle in, the couple hosted a beach party to showcase San Diego’s appeal: the ocean and Mexican food. Friends and family reminisced between bites of tasty street tacos and views of the sparkling Pacific.
