PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM

The Museum of Contemporary Art’s “Monte Carlo in Casablanca (Come to Rick’s Place!)” gala transported patrons to a swanky nightclub and casino in 1940s Morocco. The museum’s La Jolla location was transformed into the Blue Parrot Club for champagne and cocktails; guests later ducked into Rick’s Place for a gourmet dinner and dancing under the stars. Gail and George Knox chaired. SARTORIAL STANDOUT

The Country Friends presented the 52nd annual Art of Fashion luncheon and runway show at the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito. Models paraded the runway in the latest designs by Celine, Chloe, Christian Dior, Donna Karan, Fendi, Gucci, Pucci, Roberto Cavalli, Saks Fifth Avenue, Valentino and Yves Saint Laurent——all courtesy of South Coast Plaza. Marci Cavanaugh was runway show chair; Kimberly Kellogg was cochair. Janice Eickhoff and Katie Shull were luncheon chairs. A boutique shopping opportunity was chaired by Alli Beal; an after-show wine reception was chaired by Wendi Kirbey and Kate Davies.



SHAKE, RATTLE, ON A ROLL:

Mayor Jerry Sanders led a chorus of voices in the birthday song to celebrate 90 years of Girl Scouts in San Diego at the 10th-anniversary Urban Campout fund-raiser. The rockin’ 1950s-theme party, held at Girl Scouts headquarters in Balboa Park, netted a record $325,000. Susan McClellan was chair; Catherine and Phil Blair and Linda and Mel Katz were honorary cochairs. Among the cool cats and poodle skirts: Girl Scouts president Marla Black and husband Larry, CEO Jo Dee Jacob and husband Glenn, Barbara Bry and Neil Senturia, Ronne Froman and Linden Blue, Jeanne Jones, Carol LeBeau and Tom Hamilton, Kay Porter, Patti Roscoe, Suzy Spafford, Sally and John Thornton, and Maggie and Bob Watkins.



VOICES CARRY:

The Foundation for Women hosted its ninth annual Honoring the Women in Our Lives luncheon, “Many Women, One Voice,” at the San Diego Women’s Club, to raise awareness and funds for microcredit programs benefiting impoverished women here and in Africa and India. Speakers included Congresswoman Susan Davis; Joseph N. Boakai, senior vice president of the Republic of Liberia; San Diego microcredit participant Olga Castro; and Susana Garcia, microcredit program director. Judith Morgan Jennings was honorary committee chair; Lora Fischer was luncheon committee chair. Marti Emerald emceed.



PLEIN TASTY:

The fifth annual Celebrate the Craft culinary and art event showcased California chefs, farmers, vintners and artists during the two-day festival at The Lodge at Torrey Pines. The weekend kicked off with a dinner and art auction of plein-air paintings. The Picnic on the Arroyo Terrace let guests taste wine and sample gourmet bites by local chefs, including Jeff Jackson of A.R. Valentien, Timothy Au (Molly’s), Andrew Spurgin and Donald Coffman (Waters Catering), Amiko Gubbins (Happy Go Lucky), Brian Sinnott (1500 Ocean), Christian Graves (Jsix), Antonio Friscia (Stingaree), Jack Fisher (Jack’s La Jolla) and Daniel Boling (The Grill at The Lodge at Torrey Pines). The event culminated with an exclusive sunset dinner alfresco, prepared by A.R. Valentien chefs.



SHE’S GOT SPIRIT:

Morton’s, The Steakhouse partnered with the American Red Cross to honor Christine Hanna, president of Hanna Winery & Vineyard, as a Woman of Spirit at an intimate wine dinner and auction benefiting the American Red Cross. Vincent Mudd, board chairman of the San Diego chapter of the American Red Cross, also recognized local volunteer Janice Farian for her service to the community.



IN THE GREEN:

Quail Botanical Gardens presented the eighth annual Gala in the Gardens, a roving party on the Encinitas grounds featuring numerous gourmet food and entertainment stations. The gala, which recognized author and retired Union-Tribune columnist Richard Louv with the Paul Ecke Jr. Award of Excellence, benefited the gardens’ exhibits and educational programs. Patrons included Sue and Tony Godfrey, Denise Godfrey and Will McGregor, Frances Hamilton White, Jane Kirkeby, Susie and Loren Nancarrow, Julia Hampton and Paul Ecke III, Encinitas City Councilmembers Teresa Barth and Maggie Houlihan, Encinitas Mayor James Bond, Rene van Rems and Evelyn Weidner.



BELL OF THE BALL:

Nearly 400 guests attended the 24th annual Mission San Luis Rey Heritage Ball, “Heritage of the Bells,” in Oceanside. Actress Cindy Williams of the classic TV hit Laverne and Shirley was the celebrity emcee. Proceeds went toward the restoration of the bells within the historic mission’s bell tower. Patrons also raised funds for a new schoolbus program, which will allow low-income schoolchildren to visit the mission. Patty Barberio and Margaret Ulloa chaired. Belles (and beaus) of the ball included Friar James Lockman, Brother Kelly Cullen, Diane Pal and Paul West, Mary and John Steiger, Audrey Stokes, Denise and Major General Michael Lehnert, Frances Cochran, Lynette Owens, Marilyn and Michael Pollack, Maureen Sullivan, Valerie and Michael Mastronardi, Gracie Phillips, and Carolyn and George Brown.



DANCING QUEENS:

Theater critic Pat Launer and Sempra Energy executive Molly Cartmill with their partners took top honors at Malashock Thinks You Can Dance!, a ballroom dance competition at Qualcomm Hall benefiting Malashock Dance. The competition was hosted by Mary Murphy, celebrity judge and choreographer for Fox TV’s So You Think You Can Dance? Launer (with partner Daniel Vasco) won the waltz square-off, while Cartmill (paired with Dan Gibbons) was named cha-cha champ. Other contestants included San Diego first lady Rana Sampson, pro tennis player Brett Dickinson, attorney Richard Warburg, Yolanda S. Walther-Meade, Debby Jacobs, Laura Cain of Star 94.1’s Jeff and Jer Showgram and Tony Hill. Kristy Gregg was event chair; Molli and Arthur Wagner were honorary chairs.



SWEET DREAMS:

St. Paul’s LUV Gala 2007, “Noche de Suenos,” honored Bazaar del Mundo founder Diane Powers and raised funds for St. Paul’s PACE Medical Clinic. Diane Dawson and Gayle Stephenson hosted the festive affair at the Manchester Grand Hyatt. Terry Burhans emceed; honorary chairs included Julie Golden, Senator Denise Moreno Ducheny, Joyce Gattas, Deborah Szekely, San Diego Councilman Kevin Faulconer, former governor Pete Wilson and wife Gayle, and Cary Mack and Patti Roscoe. Also in attendance: San Diego Port Commissioner Mike Bixler and wife Sally, Mary and Hal Sadler, St. Paul’s Senior Homes & Services CEO Cheryl Wilson and husband Rick, Julie Golden and Bob Purvin, Yvonne and Dan Larsen, Kay Porter, Doris Howell, Charlotte and Paul Hartley, Jean and Mark Trotter, Betty and Jim Brayshay, and Nancy Graham.



FOR PETE’S SAKE:

Former California governor Pete Wilson was on hand for the unveiling of a statue in his likeness, which went up at San Diego’s own walk of fame, Horton Walk, near the NBC Building downtown. Following the unveiling, friends and supporters moved across the street to the Westgate Hotel, where they also celebrated Wilson’s birthday. Among attendees were Ann and John Davies, Kathy and Darrell Issa, Karolyn and Jack Dorsee, Debbie Dorsee, Nancy and Doug Barnhart, Barbara and Dean Dunphy, Jinx Ecke, Ruth and Jim Mulvaney, Anne Evans, Madeleine and T. Boone Pickens, Julie Meier Wright, Ruben Barrales, Sally and John Thornton, Stephanie and Steve Williams, Paul Engstrand, Louise and Ron Fuller, Kathleen and Michael McDade, and Mary and Dan Mulvihill.



WIND IN THEIR SAILS:

Scripps HospiceCare, together with host Coronado Yacht Club and community race partner Cortez Racing Association, presented the fifth annual Sharp HospiceCare Benefit Regatta to raise funds for the construction of hospice-care homes in San Diego. An elegant dinner, dance and auction at the Coronado Island Marriott were followed the next day by the afternoon regatta. Jennifer Beckey and Pam Bonin chaired. On deck: Virginia Napierskie, Michele Tarbet, Lisa and Chris Boyd, Sharon and Dr. Donald Balfour, Dr. John Jenrette, Sharon and Tim Considine, Dr. Jack Hardebeck, Connie and Philip Conard, Ann and Dr. Ron Goldberg, Kristy and Steve Gregg, Dee and Jon Ammon, Belinda and John Benson, Cindy and Phil Keesling, Trish Eaton and Jon Sanchioli, Jill and Shawn Powell, Judy and Dr. Phillip Berman, and Todd Marshall.
