Expert Advice from I Do...Weddings!

One of the most challenging aspects of wedding planning is determining what to do when. While every bride’s approach to the planning process will differ, certainly the most important detail to help get the ball rolling is choosing location and date before moving beyond to additional details. However, some wedding tasks take longer than others. For example, many bridal salons recommend six or more months of lead time to order a custom dress. On the other hand, you may be able to go to two cake tastings in a single day and be able to quickly choose your baker, flavors and design.
I Do…Weddings! highly recommends developing a priority list, with deadlines for each item, to help brides feel organized, not overwhelmed. Consider vendors and service providers that can only accommodate one event per day first, and focus on a handful of details at a time—versus attempting to order invitations, hire a musician and find an officiant all in the same week. Regardless of the length of your engagement, you and your consultant can put together a plan of attack that will ensure details aren’t overlooked and that you have time to make educated decisions and hire people you trust. Additionally, having a comprehensive budget and complete guest list at the beginning of the process will help make sure you don’t go over budget or have unexpected expenses at the end.
There is certainly a balance to be found during the planning process. Nobody wants bridal burnout, so remember: Slow and steady wins the race! If you are planning the majority on your own, ask your fiancée, parents, bridesmaids and your consultant to take ownership of smaller details to help alleviate your workload. Can the mother of the groom handle arrangements for the rehearsal dinner? Could the mother of the bride print and assemble the wedding program? Might the groom handle the music selections for the ceremony?
Throughout, there are times of considerable planning as well as downtime. Be sure to take time to relish each part of the process--and give yourself permission to take a break from all of the details! Consider designating one day a week or month as a break from planning. Exercise and other non-wedding-related activities will ensure a happy, healthy and well-rested bride!
