Groom's Day: Deciding on a Ring
A groom's perspective on weddings.
Welcome to my blog, Groom’s Day. On February 14, 2009, I proposed to my girlfriend. We’ve secured June 26, 2010 as our wedding date, and I’d like to invite you to follow my blog as we plan and prepare for the wedding. Starting in July, we’ll count down the last 12 months. From the groom’s perspective, I’ll keep you in the loop on plans, decisions, conflict avoidance, compromise and budgeting (in other words, all the excitement).
The first order of business to discuss is some pre-proposal work you’ll need to do.
THE RING
Not sure where to start with the engagement ring? Does she even want to marry you? If she has wedding magazines around the house, she’s ready!
Regarding the ring, it’s important that you understand your girlfriend’s tastes. Here are some tips:
- Ask her to pull out pictures of rings she likes — from magazines of course
- If she’s browsing ring images online, pour two glasses of wine and browse together
- If you’re out shopping, walk through the jewelry section of Macy’s or Nordstrom. Stop at the wedding ring section and let her look at rings for fun. The salesperson will ask her questions, so simply keep quiet and listen!
Bottom line: learn what she likes.
- Does she want to sacrifice quality for size?
- Does she want the biggest ring possible, or best quality?
- Does size matter at all?
- Is design most important?
Using the aforementioned methods will allow you to hone in on what she likes. You’ll seem like an intuitive genius after you present the ring to her even though she has really directed you to exactly the ring she wants. Once you collect all of this information, when you see the right ring, you’ll know. Make sure you have the “this is the one” feeling, or else you might have some buyer’s remorse.
After all, she needs to wear this ring for the rest of her life. So don’t be afraid to make the investment. If you’ve found the right one, she’s worth every penny. Once you’ve looked at rings together, you’ll be set to venture out on your own. Remember to make up a good story about where you’ll be so she isn’t suspicious! Most importantly, know her ring size! Bring some pictures of the ring styles she likes to show the salesperson.
