Groom's Day: Asking the Parents

A groom's perspective on weddings.

Groom's Day: Asking the Parents

Groom's Day: The Groom Tells All

Fellas, make sure to ask her parents before you propose.

In a modern-day spin, I asked both her mom and dad; traditionally you would only ask the father. Her parents live in North Carolina and don’t visit San Diego very often, so it was downright scary asking them if I could marry their daughter. I decided to use Skype, the free video conferencing software so that we could have a “face to face.” Earlier in the week, I e-mailed them asking if we could arrange a Skype session while my fiancé, Cat, was at work. I had been sick all week and taking Nyquil each night, so when I called them on Saturday morning, I wasn’t quite prepared — bed head, sweatshirt with hood, sleepy eyes. My original plan was to walk the dog to coffee and wake up before calling, but they called me early and I answered, nervously bantering over video conference with Cat’s parents. I believe her father said, “Get to it John.” That was my cue to ask them for her hand in marriage. I started with, “I love your daughter.” Tears followed. Pretty soon, all three of us were tearing up.

Asking the parents for their only daughter’s hand in marriage was difficult but rewarding. Your girlfriend will be extremely pleased that you took this step and your new parents will appreciate the consideration for life.
